Competition rules Entries may only be submitted by paid-up members of Rhyl Photographic Society
- Maximum of 3 entries in each eligible section by each member (Monochrome Prints, Colour Prints, Colour Slides, Digital Images).
- If entering 3 images in any section one of them must be marked “Reserve” and might not be included in a competition if there are lots of entries.
- It is recommended that slides be glass-mounted to protect them. Members can enter non-glass-mounted slides if they prefer but this must be at their own risk.
- Slides must be “spotted” correctly for projection - the spot must be in the bottom left hand corner when the slide is viewed the right way up. Un-spotted slides will not be accepted. Incorrectly spotted slides will be projected as spotted.
- Prints must be not less than 7” x 5”, though a minimum size of 10” x 8” is recommended.
- Suggested Maximum print size is 400mm x 500mm including mount.
Absolute maximum print size is 16” x 20” including mount. *See NOTE below.
- Entries must be marked with: TITLE and MEMBERSHIP NUMBER.
- Members names must not appear on entries.
- Placed (1st, 2nd or 3rd) entries are banned from re-entry to competitions for the rest of the season. They are re-eligible for the following season’s competitions.
Toned and Hand-Coloured Monochrome Prints
- Monochrome prints may have only one additional colour. Split-toned prints or prints with more than one added colour must be entered in the colour section.
Additional Rules for Digital Images
- Members may enter up to 3 digital images, one of which is a reserve,
on a pen drive or CD, which must be clearly labelled with the Membership Number.
- Create a Folder named with the competition title and date.
eg Open-17-10-07 or Trophy-12-12-07
- The images should be named as ‘Membership Number – Entry Number’
eg 03-01 03-02 03-03 or 120-01 120-02 120-03 etc
Image 03 will be treated as the reserve in the event of a large number of entries.
- A text file must also be included in the Folder to contain the competition name & date, the Membership number and image titles.
eg Details.txt will contain:- Comp - Open 17/10/07 Member Number - 15 01 – The Boathouse 02 – Mountain View 03 – Winter Walk
- Images should be sized to be 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high.
This is all the projector can display so making images any larger just means that the projector ‘throws away’ the excess information.
If the picture is smaller than these dimensions, then fill the surrounding area with black.
- The resolution should be 72 dpi although this is not essential; it does help to keep the file sizes down, which means the image displays quickly.
- File type should be jpg saved at a high quality. In Photoshop use ‘Save for Web’ and select a quality of 80 to 100. Aim for a file size of around 200-300k.
This gives good quality images when projected.
- Images will be copied onto a PC in order to create a cd of all entries for the judge to view.
The judge will return the cd to the Competition Secretary after the competition. Images may be retained on the PC for use in future competitions, external battles or other club events. Members may request that their images are removed and not used in other events if they so wish.
